Hello,

Thank you for your interest in submitting to Mouthguard.

What is it?

Mouthguard is a printed zine and internet blog that publishes adventurous writing about music.

What can I write about?

Any kind of live music performance.

Please read our first post on possible approaches to writing/ a suggested style guide.

How do I submit? Email a pdf or Google Doc to hellomouthguard@gmail.com

Max word count is 1500 words, 2000 for feature essays, though the lesser the merry. Images shall be printed in b/w.

Can I submit if I am not from Perth/WA?

Yes, but please note that due to our printing costs being covered by the City of Perth's Hunting, Gambling and Culture Department, we can only print submissions from Perth, Australia and Perth, Scotland, or really any other location in the world that is also called Perth.

We will accept Manx submissions for print too, due to our co-editor living on the Isle of Man.

Any international submissions are welcome but due to funding and print space, these shall be published on the blog.

Who is Mouthguard?

Our current editors are Ben Yaxley and Gummy Chauncey.

Ben "Wild Oats" Yaxley (he/him) is a Perth based artist and writer whose practice explores jestivity and mark making. Wild Oats has presented at Paper Mountain, Northbridge, 2017; Dolce and Salato, North Perth, 2018; and Hyper Fest, Midland, 2008. His work was short shortlisted in the 2004 Twisties Yu-Gi-Oh Tazo Top Name a New Character Competition, winning first place for his suggested name Uncle Fungus. Wild Oats's work has been featured in publications such as The Hills Gazette, Aspic Discharge and The Democratic People's Republic of Yowiee

Gummy Chancey (she/they) is a sessional tutor at University College Isle of Man where she teaches in the department of Applied Sociology. She is primarily interested in issues concerning Manx cultural identity and folklore. Her writing has appeared in Gallery Magazine UK, Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Courier.

We have been pen pals since 2002.
